We are easily illusioned to perceive unity—constellations formed from distant stars, or the phenomenon of the rat king, with tails of rats entangled together to form a singular mass. The interconnectedness, observed from above, resembles the colonial marine organism siphonophores, a composition of zooids contributing to different functions of the colony. Here, Jennifer Yue Yuen Yu extends her reach to map structures in the celestial, earthen and oceanic. In growth or in death, we find a paradoxical divide on the singular and the collective.
